Summertime Chic

Thrifted: small black shoulder bag, LOFT shorts
When I encountered these shorts I could not have been happier! Cute, black, professional-looking shorts, that fit perfectly and had pockets? What more could I ask for! To make a more summery outfit  I chose a salmon top to pair it with. The top is from Rainbow and it is very light and airy with an interesting semi-open back. To tie it all together I chose this black necklace that I got while I was taking a class in Ecuador, and threw on my thrifted black purse. Super cute, comfy, and cool for a hot summer's day!

Autumn in Central Park

Thrifted: colorful fall scarf
How lucky are we as college students to be able to spend a day in NYC and see a Broadway show all for $20.00! Sophia and I went and had a marvelous day! While there we decided to take advantage of the beautiful scenery in Central Park and we captured these beauties. Although my trench coat wasn't thrifted I got it at Kmart for such a low price. Originally $50.00 and I got it for $10.00!

Funky Foliage

Thrifted: floral print shorts
Hello everyone!  I was thrilled when I found this item and realized it was a pair of shorts rather than a skirt. Who doesn't love funky printed shorts! We apologize for the time we've been away, but we plan to get back on track.

Keep it thrifty,
Sarah

Ray of Sunshine

\
Since we've been back at college the weather has been pretty gloomy. Today was the first day it was sunny and nice, it was a perfect opportunity to wear my new $15 dress from Marshall's and enjoy the beautiful day!

Geometric Design

Thrifted: skirt and belt
I like the skirt's shape and the length, not too many skirts are this long. It's cute with an eclectic vibe. I also dig the pleats.

Things We Love: Liquid Eyeliner

So not too recently I discarded my ways of wearing eyeliner along my bottom water line and began to put it on top. The cat eye look has definitely become my favorite! Because my budget doesn't allow me to purchase more expensive make up, I usually buy items from the closest drug store. I used a liquid eye liner that dipped into the liquid with paint brush tip and I loved it. After this year though I was not able to find the same eyeliner, nor a different one with a paint brush tip.

I decided to check Sephora. Though I'm not a huge fan of the store like some of my friends (they love it), I was lead to this eyeliner. Although it cost a pretty penny ($20.00), I believe the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner it is totally worth it! The formula is smooth and not too thick or painty, but its still very dark and can create sharp lines. It also doesn't rub off easy or smudge.

So far I have loved it. I've recommend it to my friends and now to you, our readers.
Enjoy!

Love,
Sarah

Steps to Sustainability: It's the little things that count.

Although we hear about worldwide environmental crises, we may not always know how we can help. Through practicing some of these simple steps, you will easily help cut down on your carbon footprint! Why not be green if it's this easy?

Photobucket

1. Unplug When you leave electronics and appliances plugged in while they are not in use they still consume energy. Next time when you're done charging your phone, unplug the charger. Also don't forget about things like coffee makers, toasters, and any lights with cords. It may be easier to use a power strip and unplug the strip when not in use.

2. Keep Cool During the hot summer months, you may want to crank your AC all the way up. Keep inside cooler by using blinds and curtains to keep the sun and heat out. Also, keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature and keep the air conditioner vents clean so they run efficiently.

3. Switch the Lights Upgrade your incandescent light bulbs to the more energy efficient, compact fluorescent light bulb (the swirly looking kind). They save up to 3x more energy!

4. Maximize Natural Light When you're not insulating from heat, open the shades to light your home the with natural light.

5. Cold Wash When doing laundry, select the cold water wash instead of the warm. You'll save using energy from heating it.

Because you'll be saving energy you'll also decrease your energy bills! Cheers to saving!

1. Conserve It's common to hear we should take shorter showers, but it can be hard to cut our time. Take small steps. Try not to waste time standing under the water and not washing. Use your shower time to shower! Also, turning the water off while shaving and turning off the sink while brushing your teeth can help conserve gallons.

2. Drinking Water Invest in a reusable water bottle. If preferred, filtered. Sophia and I love ours! It's an easy way to cut down on waste and it helps you to stay hydrated.

1. The 3 R's
Reduce
Try not to use as many plastic bags at the store, and opt out of them when you can. Also use a reusable water bottle to be healthy and green instead of purchasing bottled drinks.
When eating only make and take as much food as you know you will eat. Food production is another issue because of negative impacts on the environment.

Reuse
Most plastic bags are saying it nowadays, but they do come in handy and it's better to reuse them then throw them away. You can also buy cloth bags for food shopping, but be careful when handling meats.

Reuse containers, paper, bags, and stay away from unnecessary packaging.

Recycle
Recycle any aluminum, plastic, paper, cardboard, and glass. Most recycling today offers collection of all. Here's a list of what is recyclable. Also, try to repair electronics and if not repairable, discard properly.

Recycle clothes by not only thrifting but donating any of your old clothes back to the thrift stores. Consignment shops such as Buffalo Exchange are available to trade or sell your more stylish items.

Other
1. "Meatless Mondays". Although meat production may not be a popular or favorite topic, it creates a large carbon foot print. You can help the environment and decrease your risk of heart disease by not eating meat everyday.

2. Coffee Drinker? Next time try to buy kinds labeled fair trade. This means that instead of there being no regulations over coffee, there are ones practiced that help disadvantaged farmers.

I hope my tips helped you out some. Help out in your little way and be more courteous to the environment. Stay sustainable!

Love,
Sarah

About Us

Welcome to the Thrifty Part of Town!
TPOT, a fashion and lifestyle blog, was created by two best friends, Sophia and Sarah, who share a love for the Earth, recycling, creating, shopping, healthy organic food and tea, and of course, thrifting. Within the 10 years that we have been best friends, we have learned ways to shop that benefit both ourselves and the planet. Through shopping at thrift stores and other small shops, we acquired an immense thrifting appreciation. Thrift shops provide a way to recycle clothing and find the most unique and best fitting clothes we can find. Along with shopping at thrift stores and sale racks, we firmly believe in living green. This includes acting in ways that are sustainable and supporting environmentally friendly principles and movements. By helping the beautiful planet we inhabit we are helping ourselves become better and healthier. You will also find ways to upcycle what you already have through DIYs.

This blog is to inform others about what is available and affordable that can benefit yourself, others, and the environment. A passion we've always shared is being fashionable on a budget, and if our tips and ideas inspire another to be thrifty and creative, we will feel honored.

Here you will find what inspires us, our thrifty outfits, reviews of stores that we have been to, beauty products that worked and didn't work, and some tutorials we made. Also expect some features of our friends.

We were both born and raised in Philadelphia and are currently seniors in college.

Sophia is currently an Early Childhood Education and Spanish major who inspires to utilize the arts into her everyday classroom. She started college as an Art major but always felt compelled to be a teacher for the little ones and switched over early on. Although fashion and art are no longer studies for Sophia, she still incorporates them into her daily life and this is why she feels so strongly about having this little blog to share. She enjoys clean eating, blending up smoothies, baking, and gardening. She believes life revolves around creation. What better way to do than through fashion, art, and food?

Sarah is majoring in Environmental Studies and Spanish and aspires to have a job conserving and protecting the Earth and its resources. Not only does she want to work here in the United States, but in South America as well. She is very passionate about water, agriculture, and energy conservation, as well as foreign languages and cultures. She hopes to visit as many beautiful sites of the world that she can. Sarah loves hiking, gardening, enjoying the outdoors, good company and enlightening conversation. Some of her favorite trends are rompers, anything fringe or crochet lace, funky pants and shorts, and dresses with sleeves.

Every single picture and graphic you see on this blog is taken or handmade by us. We sincerely hope you enjoy your time here!
